Hump-day Hodge Podge...Fantasy? Paranormal? Vampire Love?

There is so much talk these days about "paranormal" romance, urban fantasy, shape shifting, etc.  You know what I'm talking about.  You can't go anywhere without being inundated with by images of hot young guys with fangs or fur or whatever.

I know I'll probably get slammed for this, but here goes....

*********What's the big deal???***********

I'm sorry.  I'm just not getting it.  Vampires?  Werewolves?  So-called "Shape Shifters"?   Whenever I come across it, I'm like "gimme a break!".  I know it's fiction - it's not real.  But why is it so popular?  I suppose it's an escape from reality?  Believe me, I'm not criticizing anyone who enjoys this genre.  I'm just trying to understand it.

Now, I love mysteries.  Cozies especially.  I actually love the books where the animals talk!  Or where the main character can understand the animals' thoughts; i.e. Judi McCoy's Dogwalker series.  What a great read.  It's funny to read about what a dog might be thinking.

But why is this any different than reading about vampires, et. al.  It's fiction - it's not real!  Why are some people drawn to a certain genre or style of fiction, when other genres or styles just don't do it for them?

Take romance.  I mean really heavy on the heaving bosom type romance.  I can't get into it.  But I like "chick lit".

I find it interesting what drives people to read what they read.  I'm not talking about covers which I readily admit sometimes drives me to pick up a book.  But even if the cover is fantastic, if I turn to the flyleaf and it has any of those words I used above (vampire, etc.), I put it right back on the shelf.

The funny thing is, while I don't like any of the above, I absolutely LOVE books with ghosts!  Especially when the main character helps the ghost "cross over".  One of my favorite series of this type is Wendy Roberts' "Ghostdusters" series.
Once again, it's fiction - it's not real!  But why do I choose to read that kind of book?

Don't you wonder what makes you pick up one book and not even look at another?  What drives the current craze?
What's your favorite genre?  Have you jumped on the vampire bandwagon?  Won't even give it a second glance?  And why do you suppose you either love it or hate it?
