I have a whole list of such books. There is no one reason that I don't want to read these books. I think for me it's because the books are so hyped up! You can't go anywhere without seeing references to these books! Jennifer at Reading With Tequila has some "classics" and that on her list, but mine are more just mainstream "bestsellers" and whatnot.
For instance, Jennifer has The Catcher In The Rye on her list. This happens to be one of my most favoritist (yes, that's a word) book of all time. Holden Caulfield is my true love.
But anyway, on to my list. These are just some of the books that I have no desire to pick up and read. I always did like to go against the grain.....
Any of the Twilight saga (don't hurt me!)..... just so totally hyped up! I just don't "get" it, and I guess I don't want to.
Eat, Pray, Love .... Jennifer has this on her list, too. I'm glad it's not just me. No desire whatsoever. Well, maybe the "eat" part. And no, I will not go see the movie starring Julia Roberts
The Kite Runner.... (and A Thousand Splendid Suns). Again, too much hype for my taste.
Wait a minute! A thought just came to me! Many of the books on my "not to be read" (or NTBR, if you will) list have been on Oprah's book list!
It's all Oprah's fault! These books are quite possibly perfectly readable books! But because Oprah has "endorsed" them, they skyrocket to the bestseller just because she recommended them!
Now, I don't have anything against Oprah! She's a wonderful woman... and it's wonderful that so many people have taken up reading because of her recommendations. I just can't get into the "latest craze" when it comes to books.
I like what I like. And that's all I've got to say about that!
I will say that there was one book that Oprah blathered on about.... and I did read it.... and I did love it! But I didn't read it until just recently when someone gave it to me. (and I've been blathering on about it, too! But don't tell Oprah!)
The book was Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Not for the faint of heart. Excellent read. (thanks, Oprah!)
So, here are some of mine:
Elizabeth Berg - I love her because she's real. Her characters are real, her scenarios are real, and her outcomes are real.
Anne Tyler - ditto.
Victoria Thompson - she writes my favorite "Gaslight" mystery series, set in the turn-of-the-century New York City.
These are just a few of my faves. There are so many more, but these three are totally consistent, and never fail to disappooint.
How 'bout you??? Do you have any favorites??? What about the books you just can't bring yourself to read???
I love this topic because it shows just how diverse we all are in our book and author choices! That's what makes the (book) world go 'round!
Hope you all have a great weekend.... and as always,
HAPPY READING!
