Mini-Review: Let's Take The Long Way Home by Gail Caldwell

"It's an old, old story.  I had a friend and we shared everything, and then she died and so we shared that too."

Let's Take the Long Way Home: A Memoir of FriendshipLet's Take The Long Way Home by Gail Caldwell is a beautiful memoir about two friends who are devoted to eachother through thick and thin.  Gail Caldwell and Caroline Knapp share a rich history of alcoholism, a love of dogs, and a love of books.  They vacation together;  Gail swims while Caroline rows.  And they embrace their every day struggles knowing that the other one will help them through.

Until Caroline is diagnosed with lung cancer.  It is a quick downward spiral, and just like everything else they have shared through their years of sisterly friendship, Gail is there every step of the way to support Caroline, right up until her last breath.

This is a beautifully written memoir of two friends who are as close as sisters.  And even though it ends with the death of one, the book itself is not about Caroline's illness.  Rather, it focuses on their intense love for eachother and all the years they spent together leading up to her cancer.

It's about every day struggles that people face, and at the end of the day having someone there that you can call and just say, "I've had a really bad day".
A lovely, honest, raw look at the fierce devotion of two women whose friendship stood the test of time and hardship.
