New Genres... Do You Ever Stray From Your Faves?

Obviously, from the name of my blog, you know that I am a huge mystery fan.  It's my favorite genre, and it's the first section I go to when I hit the bookstore.  I just love a good mystery.

But lately, I've found that I am also becoming a huge fan of historical fiction!  I'm not quite sure when this started, but looking back, I definitely see a trend in my reading that curves towards an earlier era.  Of course, my most favorite of all time is turn-of-the-century New York City.  I love that place and time in history.  And I know that when choosing a book that is more historical than modern day, if it takes place in New York then it will most likely end up on my (ever growing) TBR pile.

And it's not just fiction that I find myself enjoying more and more.  Non-fiction is quickly gaining a place on the pile too!  I have just started Ladies And Not-So-Gentle Women  by Alfred Allan Lewis.  It is a "group" biography, if you will, of four women who had a huge impact on New York society in the early nineteen hundreds.

I found it by accident.... I just love when that happens!  And I'm loving it so much, that I went and ordered it to have on my keep shelf (the one I'm reading is from the library).  It's definitely one that I would like to own.

It's been fun finding books and authors that I might have otherwise passed by because they weren't necessarily in a genre that I would regularly choose.  It's a whole new world out there for me now, on my quest to find a good historical!

Have you ever "accidentally" stumbled upon a genre that you used to turn up your nose at, that you now enjoy regularly?  And how has it changed your book-choosing habits?  Would it make you more open to trying another genre that you wouldn't normally choose?
